Google on Wednesday announced a series of artificial intelligence upgrades to Google Vids, its cloud-based video editing platform, making high-quality video generation available at no cost to anyone with a Google account.

The updates, powered by Google’s Veo 3.1 video model and Lyria 3 music models, expand access to tools previously limited to paid subscribers and position Vids as a more direct competitor in the consumer video creation market.

Free Tier Gets AI Video Generation

Beginning this week, all personal Google account holders can generate up to 10 AI video clips per month at no cost using Veo 3.1, the company’s latest video generation model. Users can create clips from a text prompt or photo.

Google AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra subscribers can generate up to 1,000 Veo videos per month.

Music and Avatar Tools for Paid Users

Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers gain access to two additional features: custom music generation and directable AI avatars.

The music tool, powered by Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro, allows users to compose original soundtracks ranging from 30 seconds to three minutes in length.

The avatar feature, also built on Veo 3.1, gives users directorial control over AI-generated characters — including the ability to place them in custom scenes, interact with uploaded props and adjust their appearance, outfits and backgrounds.

New Tools for Capture and Distribution

Google also announced two features available to all users at no cost. A new Google Vids Screen Recorder extension for the Chrome browser allows users to record their screen directly from any webpage. A separate update enables users to publish completed videos to YouTube from within Vids, with all exports defaulting to private visibility.

Availability

All features announced Wednesday are available now. Users can access Google Vids at vids.new.
